Benefits of Ankle Surgery for Injuries That Won’t Heal

Have you ever had a pesky ankle injury that just won’t heal? You might think that there is no hope, but with ankle surgery, you can get back to a pain-free life.

Ankle Injuries

Ankle injuries are very common and when they don’t heal properly they can be painful and also lead to chronic ankle instability.

After suffering from an ankle injury you should always try treating it at home with plenty of rest, ice, elevation, and compression. If your injury is mild then your ankle will most likely heal on its own between two to twelve weeks.

You will know when your ankle is healed when you can put full weight on your foot without experiencing pain or instability.

If your injury is more severe, you might need to turn to torn ligament ankle surgery for relief. Your ankle will still be feeling weak and painful even after home treatments.

Ankle Surgery

To help restore stability in an injured ankle, ankle ligament reconstruction surgery may be needed. After unsuccessfully undergoing six months of treatment, surgery is the next step for pain relief.

Patients can choose from two options when undergoing lateral ankle ligament reconstruction surgery, tendon reconstruction, or the Brostrom-Gould technique. Only a small incision along the outside of the ankle is needed during both procedures.

The Brostrom-Gould technique is used to tighten the ligaments in the ankle by the use of stitches or by placing anchors in the fibula bone. The incision is then closed with dissolving sutures and then a splint is applied.

The patient is required to wear a cast for three to four weeks. With physical therapy, full recovery is expected to be around six to twelve months.
